Julia Mercedes Castilla

Julia Mercedes Castilla writes for children, young adults, and adults. Her books, short stories, and articles have been published in Latin America, the United States, Africa, and India. She writes in English and Spanish. Castilla was born in Bogotá, Colombia, South America, where she graduated from High School. She did her university studies in English Literature in the United States. She is married and has three children. She has lived in Houston with her family for several years.

Among her works are: Aventuras de un Niño de la Calle, Editorial Norma, 1991; this title has over twenty five printings; Pirinolo the Street Master, Zimbabwe Publishing House, 1997; Emilio, Editorial Norma, 1997, with over 8 printings; Emilio, Arte Público Press, 1999; Pirinolo the Street Master, Cambridge India, 1999; Luisa Viaja en Tren, Panamericana Editorial, 2001. This title appeared in the School Library Journal in 2003. Many of her books deal with the broad social theme of poverty and its effect on childhood and the imagination. She is frequently invited to speak at conferences, schools, and libraries for a variety of functions. Several articles and and many reviews have been written about her work, along with interviews in newspapers and magazines. The Review of Texas Books chose Emilio (English version) as an "Editor’s Choice." The Department of Education has the title on its list of books. Pirinolo the Street Master was chosen as the best book by several schools in Zimbabwe, Africa. The Library Journal and The School Library Journal have indexed Luisa Viaja en Tren and El Tesoro de la Pordiosera. Julia Mercedes Castilla was chosen Hispanic Writer of 2004.

Julia Mercedes Castilla nació en Bogotá, Colombia, Sur América. Hizo sus estudios escolares en Bogotá y estudios universitarios en literatura en los Estados Unidos. Es casada y es madre de tres hijos. En la actualidad reside en la ciudad de Houston, Texas.
